Jacob Koller is a family law attorney with more than 20 years of experience representing individuals in all aspects of domestic relations. His practice includes divorce, premarital agreements, child custody and parenting time, child support, and complex financial issues arising from the dissolution of marriage.
Jacob is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), a distinction reserved for attorneys who have demonstrated the highest levels of knowledge, skill, and integrity in the practice of family law. He is one of only seven family law attorneys in Iowa to hold this designation. Jacob serves as president of the Collaborative Lawyers of Eastern Iowa and is committed to helping clients make informed, thoughtful decisions about their futures and the futures of their children. He also served on the firm’s board of directors from 2023 through 2025.
Jacob’s family law practice includes the following areas:
Litigation. Jacob believes the best result in any family law matter is a successfully negotiated resolution. When settlement is not possible, however, he is a seasoned trial lawyer with extensive experience preparing and trying complex cases. His litigation practice includes high net worth marital estates, large farm and livestock operations, closely held business interests, and contested child custody matters. He is a 2008 graduate of the American Family Law Trial Advocacy Institute, an advanced trial training program for attorneys who concentrate their practices in family law.
Collaborative Law. Jacob is trained in collaborative law and is a founding member of the Collaborative Lawyers of Eastern Iowa. Collaborative law is a non-adversarial process that frames divorce and family restructuring as problems to be solved rather than battles to be won. The process allows parties, with the guidance of their independently retained attorneys, to craft durable and personalized solutions outside of court. Jacob is also a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals.
Mediation. Mediation has become a central component in the resolution of family law disputes. Jacob is a trained lawyer mediator, having completed a 40-hour mediation training in 2009, and has successfully mediated hundreds of cases. As a mediator, he serves as a neutral who assists parties and their attorneys in reaching resolution without the need for court intervention.
Family Law Arbitration. With the enactment of the Iowa Uniform Family Law Arbitration Act in April 2026, arbitration has become an important additional option for resolving family law disputes. Jacob completed comprehensive family law arbitration training through the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers in 2023 and is prepared to serve as an arbitrator in appropriate cases. Arbitration can offer parties a more private, efficient, and flexible alternative to traditional litigation, while still providing a binding resolution.
Appellate Advocacy. In cases where trial court decisions are challenged, Jacob has experience handling both the prosecution and defense of family law appeals. His appellate work includes cases tried by his firm and matters referred by other attorneys. He has successfully argued cases before the Iowa Supreme Court and the Iowa Court of Appeals.
